The overwhelming problems some people face in the course of their lives can frequently lead them to commit acts they would never consider under usual circumstances.

There is the employee who, laid off from his job, stoops to theft in order to feed his family; the witness who perjures himself in order to save a friend; the football player who, under immense pressure to perform extremely difficult plays, takes drugs to improve his performance.

Karen Lewis is one of these people, for her problem-a husband who fails to satisfy her sexually-leads her to seek satisfaction in the arms of strangers, despite her strong inner conviction that adultery is wrong, despite the knowledge that her illicit behavior cannot go on undetected forever.

Karen was happy to get the phone call from her friend Susan the night before. Susan, a secretary at Wilson Insurance Agency, downtown, had asked Karen if she wouldn’t mind working at the office a few days to help out with some extra typing. Always willing to help out her friend, and glad to earn some extra money, Karen agreed immediately.

Now, it was almost six o’clock, and Karen had put in a full day’s work. Susan and her boss, Tom Wilson, were in his office working on some bookkeeping while Karen finished typing some letters. She was anxious to get home for some dinner. She knew her husband Frank would be there by the time she got home. He would have to fix his own dinner tonight if she didn’t get home pretty soon, but he wouldn’t mind, Karen thought. Tonight was the night of one of the big football games, and when it came to football, Frank would rather watch football than eat.

Karen finished the last of the letters and stood up from the desk to take them into Mr. Wilson’s office. As she did so, she ran her fingers through her long, brown hair and straightened her short skirt that had become rumpled from sitting for so long in the chair.
