The carpet prickled Paula’s bare feet. Muscles taut, feeling totally vulnerable in her nakedness, she hurried up the stairs, cursing the third step from the top when it squeaked under her weight. At the top of the stairs she stopped for a split second, a perverse thrill making her nipples erect and her cunt water. Then she slipped into the master bedroom as silently as possible. As she started to close the door, she heard him moving around downstairs. It was too soon! She wasn’t ready yet. She chewed on her lower lip, tensing. She hurried too much, and the latch of the door snapped loudly, sounding even more deafening because of her effort not to make any noise.
On shaking legs, she took three quick steps across the room to the closet, jerked the door open and slipped inside, pressing through the tightly packed clothes. Shoving between a slick satin dress and the scratchy tweed of one of his suits, she huddled against the back wall of the closet. Straining her ears, she heard slow, steady steps coming up the stairs.
