“I never knew you were into dogs,” Ray Simpson, the animal shelter manager said.
“Oh, yes, I’ve always loved dogs,” Tess Powell said. “And I-I’ve just been alone too much lately. I need the kind of companionship a dog can offer. That’s why I came here to the pound, to find a dog for myself.”
“You know, men can offer companionship, too, Tess,” Ray said, his eyes roving over the woman’s trim body.
Tess blushed. This was not the first time Ray had shown an interest in her. But, as attracted as she was to him, she simply could not bring herself to respond.
“Can I go back to the pens now and look the dogs over?” Tess asked, deciding to ignore Ray’s remark.
“Yeah, sure, go ahead.”
Tess wandered down the aisle between the cages where the dogs were kept. They all began to bark, as if begging her to take them home with her. Tess felt a pang, wishing she could rescue all of them.
