Mely leaned across the luncheon table and placed her hand over Diana’s in a gesture of sympathy.
“Look honey, something is bothering you. You haven’t been yourself for several days … is it something you can talk about? I realize we haven’t known one another very long but if I can help in any way…”
Diana swallowed hard to keep back the tears. She hadn’t realized her misery was so obvious. She looked back at Mely, regarding her closely. She had to tell someone, to talk to someone; the thing was tearing her apart.
“Oh, Mely, it’s so terrible . . . I’m so frightened and ashamed.” Mely waited quietly for Diana to continue.
“My vacation starts Monday, a whole month. It was to be my honeymoon,” she paused biting her lower lip a little. “We went together for nearly a year … he never acted like that before . . . before the other night.”
“Yes, go on,” Mely urged.
“We were parked up on the knoll by the river. Rob had been drinking but I didn’t realize he was drunk. He begged me to set the date for our wedding. That’s when it happened. I agreed to get married next week and all at once he grabbed me and said that there wasn’t any sense waiting till then to fuck each other.”
