Although Americans appear to the rest of the world as frank and open people, the truth is often the opposite when it comes to relating on an individual basis. This is particularly true regarding sexual relationships.
The fact is, Americans are only now learning to discuss sex and sexuality with candor, and usually that is within the limits of marital sex.
While no one is advocating sex as the prime focus of life, and while sexual privacy is very important, many adults harbor fears about themselves and their sexual behavior that could be erased if they were more aware of other people’s behavior. Most of us have been brought up to be at least slightly ashamed of anything sexual, and it is frequently reassuring to discover that we are not different, naughty, or even perverted in our sexual practices. In discussing sex with others, people find out how truly normal they are.
The characters in NEIGHBORS DO IT BETTER are cases in point. Their story is one of real importance for our hung-up society. It is a story well worth the reading if we are ever to understand our own sexuality.
Tina Rogers lay naked in bed, listening to the rain hit the roof. It was almost nine, and her husband Ed still wasn’t home from work. That didn’t surprise her. On a night like this, Ed would probably be kept late. But Tina wished like hell that he was in another occupation.
As a plumber, Ed would be out right now dealing with flooded basements and clogged drain pipes. Tina wished he was home dealing with her. Her plumbing was really neglected.
She almost moaned aloud with need as she thought of her handsome husband.
She and Ed had been married almost five years, but the magic hadn’t gone out of their marriage. They were as hot for each other as the day they met. The only problem was Ed’s job. Now that he’d gone into business for himself, he never seemed to have any time off.
Sure, he was making good money so that someday soon they could buy their dream house and have a family, but in the meantime Tina was going out of her mind with sexual frustration. She needed a lot more loving than Ed was able to give her.
