Judy sat looking at Bob and Trixie. The two had been married about thirteen or fourteen years, and Judy had known them for the past three. After the death of her husband, Judy had grown closer to them, needing the understanding and support they provided.
Her son, Jimmy, and their son, Joey, had been fast friends all those years. They had become as close with each other as Judy had with Bob and Trixie. During her period of lonely grief, she had been happy that Jimmy had someone he, too, could turn to.
But about two or three months ago, something had entered into the already close relationship between her and Trixie, and Bob seemed to be closer, also.
Now, sitting in their living room, the television flickering but no one watching it, Judy felt a vague sense of anticipation, a tension that was unlike any she had ever felt before. There seemed to be something totally different about Trixie, but Judy could not put her finger on it. Although Trixie sat next to her husband on the couch, as she usually did in the evenings, Judy felt a difference.
