“You like my dogs, Miss White?” the owner of the kennel asked.
“Um, oh yes. They’re very beautiful animals,” Lillian stammered. She tried to turn around and continue the tax audit she was giving the kennel owner.
“They’re my only income, and as you can see, I’m not doing all that well,” the owner said, obviously trying to score an important financial point.
Lillian smiled as she realized what the owner was trying to do. This wasn’t the first time a businessman tried to pretend that he was poor in front of her. But Lillian had been working as a tax auditor for the Internal Revenue Service too long to be moved easily.
“Well, I can’t really be sure about this, Mr. Yonts,” Lillian said coolly as she brushed back her long blonde hair.
