Jane Martin was sitting in her small apartment, polishing her nails. She hated the place as much as the run-down neighborhood, but being recently divorced and trying to support her young daughter, she couldn’t afford anything better.
Waiting for the polish to dry, Jane watched her young daughter sitting across the room with her big mongrel dog at her feet. Robin was a pretty child with a heart-shaped face, long red hair and flashing green eyes. She was a quiet youngster who rarely gave her mother any trouble.
Watching the young girl, Jane wished she didn’t have to send her away for the summer, but she had no other choice. With school out and Jane working, there would be no one to look after Robin, so she was sending the youngster to her uncle’s farm.
