“Me?” Jane Parker said. “Oh, no, you’ve got to be kidding.”
“I’m not kidding, Jane,” replied Howard Martin. “You’re the only person who can do it. All the kids are counting on you.”
“Hell,” Jane muttered.
Jane and Howard, both teachers, were discussing the annual spring hike of the Central High Troopers, a boys’ club. Howard, the leader and adviser of the Troopers, had broken his leg, leaving the boys without supervision for their traditional spring hike. Now he was asking Jane to take his place.
Jane hated the idea. She enjoyed hiking, but she didn’t relish the idea of leading a dozen high-spirited teenage boys on a week-long trip through the woods. It was hard enough to control those kids in the classroom. She would have rejected the job immediately, except for one thing—she was in love with Howard Martin.
“Oh, Howard, I don’t know,” she sighed. “I’m a woman, after all. Would the boys obey me?”
“Sure,” Howard said confidently. “They know you’re a first-rate hiker and a good teacher. No reason why they shouldn’t obey you just like they’d obey me. Please, Jane, say you’ll do it. It would be a terrible disappointment for them to miss this hike.”
