Debbie Hathaway folded her small hands in her lap, pushing her long tapered legs under the chair as the clock on the living room wall ticked the hour away. It was nearly five o’clock, the time when Debbie’s uncle would be arriving from San Francisco to help her settle the affairs of the large farm her parents had left her. The pretty brunette sighed sadly, sucking in her lower lip and biting down lightly. It was only one month since her parents were killed in the Tenerife air disaster-one month after her high school graduation. There seemed to be so much to look forward to. And now Debbie could see only a gray haze settling over an uncertain future. There was the farm with all the animals and fields. Maybe her uncle Jack would be able to tell her whether she should sell it or keep it as an investment.
For in spite of her grief, Debbie couldn’t help thinking about the money she could get from selling the farm. She’d use the profit for college. That was someplace she’d hoped her father would have sent her in a year or two. But now she wouldn’t go to that Baptist Bible-thumping university in Iowa. No, it would be USC, UCLA or maybe even Columbia in New York. She could shake off the tyrannical morals her parents had laid on her for years. Then she could experience what the other girls in school talked so much about things, Debbie could only fantasize about later in bed alone.
