Who can judge a person’s reactions during stress situations? The prisoners of war who give in to their captors’ demands; the kidnapped heiress who joins forces with her abductors— all must act without past experience to guide them. All must make decisions in a vacuum, without benefit of familiar people or situations to guide them. The end result can be either a positive or a negative experience.

“It’s just that I adore Romantic poetry,” Lavinia Young gushed, gazing around the room as she spoke. It looked like a wonderful party. Just about all her students were there and everyone was having such a good time.
“Oh, that was obvious,” Fritz said, leaning down and smiling at Lavinia. “But it was just that we noticed, that you are so, so romantic, but you do not have any men around you.”
Lavinia smiled. Fritz’s English was fairly faultless, but sometimes he didn’t express himself very well.
“Romance is one thing,” she said, still speaking with her teacher voice, “but men, well they are something else.” She paused to toss her wonderful dark hair over her shoulders. “Men have no sense of romance. That’s why I don’t have anything to do with them.”
She smiled brightly at Fritz and he smiled back.
“But we think it strange that a beautiful woman like you should not have men around.”
“When a man is romantic and treats me properly, then I might decide to see him,” Lavinia said loftily. She took a sip of her wine.
