Kerry Nelson whirled around, dropping the heavy metal petty cash box with a crash. She turned toward the booming voice and her heart sank. She had never been so frightened in her life.
The voice belonged to her boss, Nick Anders. He had been with the company only a few months, but all the girls were afraid of him. He was big and gruff and curt. More than one secretary had left his office in tears.
If Kerry hadn’t needed her job so badly she would have defended herself angrily. But her husband, Mark, was just starting out in his own business and they needed every penny she brought home. Under the circumstances she suppressed her indignation. And she had been caught with her hand in the till, so to speak. No, she had to try and placate the glowering man in some way. She just had to.
“But, I …” she began, her throat tight and constricted. “I was just going to borrow lunch money. I’m running a little short this week.”
