It was Henry David Thoreau, in Walden, who remarked, “The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.” This statement appears to be just as true today as it was then. Perhaps it is even more valid today considering the pressures and frequent monotony of today’s world.

The majority of today’s men and women live in boring circumstances, and then the opportunity for change arises, they are often quick to seize the chance. For the characters in this story, the opportunity is one which many would consider perverse and deranged. But it provides a release and a need. All morals and scruples are cast aside in a moment of madness — a chance to grab pleasure before it is taken away.

AND MOM MAKES THREE is a novel about the quiet desperation in so many of us and the extremes to which it may drive us.

Sally Robbins made sure no one was watching, then slipped the master key into the lock of Room 120. She walked in quickly, closing the door behind her. Already, she was beginning to shiver with excitement, her nipples hardening under her light summer blouse.

The room looked pretty much like any of the other twenty-five rooms in the motel — double bed, nightstand, rickety chest of drawers. But there was one important difference — on the far wall, hung lower than the paintings in the other rooms, was a large painting of a sailboat.

Sally approached it and carefully lifted it off the wall, then laid it aside. Underneath it was what looked like a large window looking into the room next door. It was Sally’s secret vice — a two-way mirror.
