The mid-afternoon sun streamed through the kitchen windowpanes to form golden squares of light on Cindy Collin’s outstretched legs as she sat pensively staring at the spacious yard outside of her home. To the side she could see the front lawn, freshly mown into a lovely expanse of verdant green, as smooth as a velvet carpet unrolled from the narrow, tree-shaded street. Like gems in gold settings, each house in the neighborhood was nearly surrounded by perfectly kept hedges and flowering bushes.
If only her personal life was as fresh and pure as her home setting. . .
Tears of misery welled up in Cindy’s clear blue eyes as she stared over at the white-doubled tiered birthday cake, its red rose trimmings that had looked so perky and fresh in the bakery, now blurred into a smudge of blood red.
The blonde wife swallowed hard, feeling her throat tighten, her emotions choking her. Oh, she had looked forward to this evening-Ralph’s surprise birthday party-for so long, had planned, met with caterers to decide on appropriate foods, had hand-picked the roses that would float in the chilled champagne bowls. And now she didn’t know if she even wanted to be there. Something had happened yesterday to dampen her enthusiasm, cooled her bubbling fervor like champagne gone flat. Jay North, her lustful neighbor and a real DEVIL had returned from a two year business venture in London, bringing with him black memories of Cindy’s sordid past.
