As Cynthia hurried through the park, two things were on her mind. The first was whether she should go out with Ronny Carson next Saturday night. The second was that she’d forgotten whether her period would be starting by Saturday. Of course, it wouldn’t matter if she didn’t date Ronny. But if she did, and if Ronny wanted to take her swimming out at Jackson’s pool, and if her period had started, she didn’t know how she’d get out of it.
It was getting cool now in the last few weeks of August. The park was pleasant to be in, but later Cynthia wouldn’t enjoy it so much. On her way back home the darkness would be scary. Behind very tree, a shadow would hide god knows what. Cynthia had even heard rumors that a huge dog stalked the grassy grounds after the sun went down. No one had been bitten or hurt, but one girl, so the story went, had been cornered down by the old bandstand. The dog had ripped her dress off.
“Strange way for a dog to act,” Cynthia thought out loud. She hugged her shoulders as a tremble went through her. No one knew who the dog belonged to, or even exactly what he looked like. Cynthia smiled to herself. It was funny how she thought of the animal as a male. But there was something distinctively male about a dog ripping off a girl’s dress-if in fact the incident had actually occurred.
Thinking these things had caused Cynthia to feel strange. She was a little damp between her thighs, and as she came upon a couple locked in a fiery embrace, she stopped behind a bush to watch.
