“Boy, if your folks ever find out you’re meeting Keith on the sly . .”
“I know, I know,” Darla frowned at her friend Betty and turned her attention back to the mirror. She was fluffing her blonde hair, adjusting each soft curl so it exposed the perfect pink whorls of her small ears.
The Cactus Drive-In Movie was only about half full, and it would be a few more minutes before the show began. Betty’s date had just started a cigarette as he glanced back at Darla.
“Keith tells me he’s thinking about running away with you. That right?”
“I wish he’d keep his mouth shut. It’s not going to help if everybody in town knows.”
“Old man Jackson will raise hell, but not half as much hell as your father will raise,” the boy laughed.
Darla put down her comb and turned to him. “It’s their fault. If they’d just let us date like normal people . . .”
Betty laughed. “But you two don’t date like normal people. I think that’s what bothers them.”
Darla blushed, but had to smile a little to show she’d acknowledged the teasing. It was true. She and Keith were rumored to be the hottest thing going, even after their parents had made them break it off.
