Laura Thurston leaned to the right, looking at a tall, dark-haired bearded man standing to one side of the punch bowl. Her friend Elaine was almost shivering with excitement when he turned, spotted the two sitting women and smiled friendlily.
“Elaine, I don’t know why you brought me here. I feel so foolish, so . . . out of place,” Laura whispered, dropping her eyes modestly when she realized the man was staring at her.
