Betsy’s father looked up and smiled. “I see you’re ready for bed.” He gave her his cheek, expecting his usual nightly kiss.

Betsy kissed him, then did the same to her mother.

“Where’s the dog?” her mother asked.

“He’s in the hallway, waiting for me,” Betsy said.

“How come he’s not outside in his doghouse?”

Betsy frowned. She looked for her father for support. “He starts obedience school tomorrow. Can’t he stay in my room with me?”

Frank Grimes smiled at his wife. “C’mon, Kay. It can’t hurt.”

Kay Grimes shook her head at her husband. He was as much a child as Betsy. She smiled at her daughter. “What about the doghouse we bought for him?”

Betsy screwed up her face. “He doesn’t like it,” she said, speaking for Tippy. “When he’s in the house with us, he’s better able to protect us from burglars.”

“Not locked in your room,” Frank said, laughing.

“Awwwww, please!” she begged. “He likes sleeping with me.”

“All right,” Kay Grimes said. She stared sternly at Frank. “It’s all your fault. You spoil her.”

Betsy wasn’t paying any attention. She kissed them both again and ran happily from the room.

“You spend too much time with that dog,” Kay called out to her, but her words fell on deaf ears.

Frank shook his head. “You don’t know how it is, hon. You never had a pet when you were a kid.”

Kay ignored him, going back to the television program.

Betsy didn’t care. She was happy beyond belief.
