“Well, you can have the job if you want it, Philippa,” said Claire Upton, smiling. Then he woman blushed slightly. “But there’s one duty that you might find unpleasant … or even disgusting.”
“Why, what can that be?” Philippa Cramer asked, surprised. What could be disgusting about working on a farm, for heaven’s sake? It was wholesome, healthy labor. Claire told her.
Philippa gasped, looking amazed.
“I realize that it’s not the sort of thing a girl expects to have to do, but it’s necessary,” Claire explained. “I . . . I see,” Philippa stammered.
“Well? Do you want the job?”
“I … I’ll have to think about it,” Philippa said. She was shocked and startled by the idea. Philippa was eighteen years old and had just graduated from high school.
