“Getting eager, aren’t you?”
Paula glanced at her daughter sitting on the seat next to her. Mary was squirming, and the closer they got, the more she squirmed.
“Kinda, Mother,” she replied, a faint blush on her cheeks.
Paula smiled to herself, knowing what that flush signified. In one way she was pleased, but in another it disturbed her. Mary was very eager to see her brother, Ted, again. That in itself was fine, she thought. A sister should be eager to see her brother after a nine-month separation. She was eager, herself. For a moment, Paula wondered if her eagerness was the same as her daughter’s.
While driving, Paula let her thoughts go to last summer when Ted was with them. And, as she remembered it, Paula realized her anxiety was just about for the same reasons as Mary’s. Maybe not exactly the same, but so similar that it made no difference.
