Debby Winters stepped onto the bus and turned to wave good-bye to her mother and father. Her mother, Julia, waved back, smiling. Her father, John, waved too, but he wasn’t smiling. He was looking at his daughter as she mounted the steps and realizing that the teenaged girl was growing up.
“Have a nice time, dear,” Julia called.
Then she shot a sideways glance at her husband.
“You’re really looking forward to this, huh?” he said.
“Ummmm-if you’re sure that you don’t mind, John.”
“Hell, no-it ought to be a ball!”
The last passengers boarded the bus and it pulled away. John and Julia looked at each other. They both seemed excited. Debby was going to spend the week at her aunt Sarah’s house in the country and Julia and John had made some naughty plans.
“We might as well go straight to the motel, right?” John suggested. “I’ve already reserved a room.”
